Wheat crop in mostly good shape




As another growing season approaches, Illinois’ winter wheat crop is in mostly good condition.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 47 percent of the wheat crop is in good shape, while 11 percent is rated excellent. Thirty-three percent is in fair condition, while 5 percent is rated poor and 4 percent is very poor.
Statewide, the average temperature last week was 39.9 degrees, .4 degrees above normal. In Crawford County, the average temperature was slightly more than 47.7 degrees.
Precipitation averaged 4.69 inches, 2.13 inches above normal. Showers dumped 3.62 inches of rain locally.
Topsoil moisture supply was rated 1 percent very short, 4 percent short, 55 percent adequate and 40 percent surplus.
Subsoil moisture supply was rated 1 percent very short, 8 percent short, 62 percent adequate and 29 percent surplus.
