County jobless rate remains up

Unemployment in Crawford County dropped between January and February but remained slightly higher than it was a year earlier.

According to the Illinois Department of Employment Security, the county unemployment rate during the month was 4.6 percent. This was down from 5.1 percent a month earlier but still higher than the 4.2-percent rate posted in February 2023.

Neighboring Illinois counties reported similar results.

Clark County’s February jobless rate was 6.3 percent, down from 6.7 percent in January but still considerably higher than in 2023 when the rate was 4.8 percent.

Jasper County posted a rate of 5.1 percent. That was down slightly from 5.5 percent a month earlier but up from 4.3 percent last year.

In Lawrence County, the rate was 6 percent, down from 6.4 percent in January but up from 5.6 percent last year.

Statewide, the February jobless rate was 5.3 percent, down from 5.1 percent the previous months but up from 4.5 percent last year.

In Indiana, Vigo County reported an unemployment rate of 5 percent in February. That was up from 4.5 percent in January and 4.2 percent a year ago.

Sullivan County, at 5.2 percent, was up from 4.6 percent a month earlier and 4.2 percent in 2023.

Knox County posted 4-percent rate. That compared to 3.6 percent in January and 3.1 percent last year.

The statewide unemployment rate in Indiana was 4.2 percent. That was up from 3.8 percent in January and 3.1 percent last year.

The national February jobless rate was 4.2 percent, up from 4.1 percent a month earlier and 3.9 the previous year.
