Lady Panthers outslug Red Hill, 10-7, for first win


It wasn’t easy, but Oblong High School’s softball team finally found its way into the win column Tuesday.

The Lady Panthers won a back-and-forth contest at Red Hill in Little Okaw Valley Conference play, holding on for a 10-7 victory.

Oblong struck first with a run in the second inning, only for Red Hill to score three in the bottom of the frame. The Lady Panthers responded with four in the third to take a 5-3 lead, then each team scored a run in the fifth to make the score 6-4. Oblong tacked on four more runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 10-4, while Red Hill scored three in the bottom of the sixth, but was unable to get any closer.

Layla Krick led the OHS offense with two singles, three runs batted in and a run scored, while Marissa Neeley tripled, knocked in two runs and scored a run. Zya Bricker singled, drove in three runs and scored two runs, Macy Krick singled and scored two runs, Sam Meese posted a base hit and a run batted in, Maddie Williams singled and scored a run and Jorie Weber scored two runs.

Bricker was the winning pitcher, allowing seven runs (four earned) on four hits, while walking eight and striking out four in five and one-third innings. Ginna Russell finished up, walking one and striking out three in one and two-thirds innings of relief to earn the save.

Oblong (1-7, 1-0 LOVC) is next scheduled to play at Olney Monday at 4:30 p.m.
