The new city administration is not following in the footsteps of the previous administration in respect to automobiles. It is not an infrequent occurrence to hear a car going down one of the business streets with the cut-out open. Speeding also seems to be growing in favor with some drivers.

Justice Helm’s court is busy on account of delinquent poll taxes in Lawrence town. The time of payment has been extended twice but some people forgot or neglected to pay within the set time.

An ice cream social will be given by the U.B. Sunday school in George Wilson’s grove on July 16.

july 12, 1946

The Lawrenceville City Council passed an ordinance for the tax levy of $30,000 on city property.

Opening this week at the Avalon is “The Caravan Trail” starring Eddie Dean.

The new Lawrence County Speedway, on George Field Road between Lawrenceville and Vincennes, will open on July 14 with Midget Auto Races at 2 p.m.

july 9, 1971

Over 120 students are presently enrolled in the second of three, two-week sessions of swimming lessons at the Lawrence Township Park Pool. Sessions include beginner, advanced and intermediate levels.

Arson may be blamed for a fire reported at 2 a.m. in Sumner. The fire of undetermined origin destroyed the barn. Extensive damage had already occurred before firefighters arrived.

Over $30,000 has been allocated to Lawrence County governments as their share of the motor fuel tax paid into the “state treasury” in June.

Roads in Birds, township and county roads, and Birds Village Hall damaged by the spring flooding are next in line for repairs following the disaster declaration for Lawrence County.

Zachary Buher, 11, Lawrenceville, said he will exhibit his Angus heifer “Lucy” in the National Junior Angus Show this year. This is the second year Buher has entered the show and he received Grand Champion last year.

The 15th annual Lawrence County Relay for Life was held at the Lawrenceville City Park on Saturday. The highlight was the survivor celebration lap that opened the evening ceremony.

The eighth Day at the Strip will feature a large car show, a timed quarter-mule drag strip, autocross and a “Speed Stop Challenge.” The annual event is sponsored by Bowler Performance Transmissions and the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce.
