LAWRENCEVILLE –– Mistakes are going to happen throughout the course of a football game, but when you make them against good teams, bad things tend to happen.
That was the case for Lawrenceville High School’s football team Thursday night and the end result was a 47-14 loss to Robinson in a Little Illini Conference contest.
“We’ve got some things that need to be cleaned up,” LHS head coach Travis Reider said. “But, the kids played hard. The effort and intensity was there, we just made some mistakes and Robinson made us pay for them.”
The Indians dug themselves a hole right off the bat, as Robinson took the opening kickoff and marched right down the field, scoring on a Wesley Jackson three-yard touchdown run at the 6:42 mark for a 6-0 lead.
An interception on a tipped ball on the first play from scrimmage for the Indians gave the ball right back to Robinson in LHS territory. However, it appeared that the Indian defense had Robinson stopped by putting them in a fourth-and-long situation, as Jackson appeared prepared to punt the ball, but a low snap messed up the timing of the play. Instead, he scrambled and was able to complete a 33-yard pass to Thomas Brown down the right sideline for a first down. On top of that, the Indians were hit with a roughing the passer penalty, making it first-and-goal from the six. Robinson would cash in two plays later on a two-yard run from Levi Dickerson to make the score 13-0.
While the Indians continued to struggle offensively throughout the first half, Robinson would score on each of its remaining four possessions of the half, as Jackson added a six-yard run late in the first quarter, then Dickerson broke loose for a 61-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Garrett Florkowski and Wrigley Young also added touchdown runs for a 40-0 advantage with 39.9 seconds left before halftime.
However, Hunter Scott gave the Lawrenceville fans something to cheer about before halftime, as he returned a kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown to make the score 40-6 at halftime.
Robinson would add a score in the third quarter, as Florkowski ran in from six yards out, making the score 47-6 and kicking the continuous clock into effect due to the IHSA’s 40-point mercy rule.
Lawrenceville then tacked on a score in the fourth quarter, when Brenyn Winningham found Ryan Schultz for a four-yard touchdown pass and connected with Kolby Stoops on the two-point conversion to round out the scoring.
The Indians were outgained 412-175 in total yards and also turned the ball over three times to just one turnover for Robinson.
Winningham – who had thrown for nearly 500 yards in his first two games – was limited to 8-25 passing for 101 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Winningham was also the leading rusher for LHS with 63 yards on nine carries. Stoops was the leading receiver with two catches for 43 yards, while Scott had four catches for 42 yards, Bryant Jenkins added two receptions for 26 yards and Schultz caught a touchdown pass for his only reception.
Robinson was led by Jackson with 165 passing yards while completing 10 of 14 passes, and he also ran for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Dickerson ran for 93 yards and two scores, Florkowski rushed for 28 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for 38 yards, Young ran for 34 yards and a touchdown and Brown was the leading receiver for RHS with four catches for 87 yards.
“There were times where we did a really good job of stopping their run game, but big plays and penalties hurt us,” Reider said. “But, the kids continue to play hard and that’s all you can ask for. We’ll keep working and try to get better.”
