LAWRENCEVILLE — James “Jim” R. Piper, age 77, of Lawrenceville, passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2021 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Indiana.

He was born on Aug. 4, 1943 in Sumner, the son of Cecil and Dorothy Acton (Piper). He married Sharon “Sue” Boatman on June 15, 1963, and she survives.

Jim was a Bridgeport High School graduate. He worked at AMF in Olney, owned and operated Jim Piper Construction, and after his retirement he was a truck driver for Thompson Farms. His memberships included the White House Christian Church, Shriners and Masonic Lodge in Bridgeport; and he served as a trustee on the Lawrence Allison Fire Protection District. He was an avid fan of St. Louis Cardinals baseball and Illinois basketball. His hobbies included coon hunting, deer hunting, as well as camping with his family; and in his earlier years, he enjoyed working on cars.

Preceding him in death were: his parents; three brothers, Ron Piper, John Piper and Robert Piper; and one sister, Carol Heath.

Survivors include: his wife, Sue; one daughter, Sandra Thompson and husband, J.R. of Lawrenceville; three brothers, Gene Piper of Fort Wayne, Indiana; David Piper and wife, Twyla of Lawrenceville; and Bud Piper and wife, Radonna of Laurel, Mississippi; two sisters, Cleora Gillespie-Weger of Flat Rock; and Dorothy Laughlin of Bridgeport; two grandchildren, Johnna Thompson; and John R. Thompson and wife, Kalena; and three great-grandchildren, Rhys, Rory and Tyne Thompson.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at 10 a.m. (CDT) at the Emmons-Macey and Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. (CDT) at the funeral home and on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. (CDT) at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Lawrenceville City Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lawrenceville Senior Citizens Center.
