Three games in five days did not net much success for Lawrenceville High School’s girls’ basketball team recently, as the Lady Indians went winless at the Little Illini Conference Tournament.
The Lady Indians – who were seeded eighth out of eight teams – opened play against top-seeded Paris Jan. 14 and suffered an 85-22 loss.
Lawrenceville trailed 21-6 after one quarter, 47-16 at halftime and 70-18 after three quarters, then were outscored 15-4 in the fourth quarter to reach the final margin.
Gracie Hughes led LHS with six points, while Gracie Stallings contributed five, Beth Ruppel scored four, Addy Brush, Addeline Sanders and Keely Breen each netted two and Kourtney Sholders added one.
Kaitlyn Coombes led Paris with 23 points, while also in double figures for the Lady Tigers were Deming Hawkins with 15, Graci Watson with 12 and Kendra Young with 10.
Other quarterfinal games Saturday saw fifth-seeded Mt. Carmel knock off fourth-seeded Marshall, 53-51, second-seeded Olney down seventh-seeded Casey-Westfield, 38-21 and third-seeded Robinson handle sixth-seeded Newton, 51-32.
The loss sent LHS into the consolation bracket, where they dropped a 57-38 decision to Marshall on Jan. 16.
The Lady Indians trailed 21-6 after one quarter, 36-15 at halftime and 47-31 after three quarters, then lost the fourth quarter 10-7 to reach the final totals.
Sanders led LHS with 10 points, while Breen posted 10, Cook and Brush each scored four, Stallings and Mallory Lockhart netted three points apiece and Hughes added two.
Adi Scott led Marshall with 17 points, while Zara Engledow scored 11.
Also that night, Newton beat Casey-Westfield 43-23 in the other consolation semifinal, while in the winners’ bracket semifinals Jan. 17, Paris hammered Mt. Carmel 54-13 and Robinson beat Olney 53-37.
In the seventh-place game Jan. 18, the Lady Indians lost to Casey-Westfield, 57-36.
Lawrenceville led 15-10 after one quarter, but was outscored 17-5 in the second period for a 27-20 halftime deficit. The Lady Indians then trailed 44-28 after three quarters and were outscored 13-8 in the fourth quarter to reach the final totals.
Cook led LHS with 11 points, while Stallings contributed eight, Breen posted six, Sanders scored five and Hughes and Lockhart netted three points apiece.
Kamryn Smith and Grace Towles led Casey-Westfield with 16 points apiece, while Julia Eckerty was also in double figures with 12.
In the fifth-place game that night, Marshall beat Newton 51-44, while on Jan. 19, Mt. Carmel edged Olney, 38-36, in the third-place game and Paris beat Robinson, 45-25, in the championship game.
Lawrenceville then returned to regular season action Monday and suffered a 64-28 loss at the hands of Olney.
The Lady Indians trailed 24-3 after one quarter, 44-12 at halftime and 62-26 after three quarters, then with the clock running continuously due to the IHSA’s 30-point mercy rule, each team scored two points to reach the final totals.
Lockhart led LHS with eight points, while Sholders contributed five, Stallings and Hughes each scored four, Sanders and Breen posted three points apiece and Cook netted one.
Kelysse Weiler led Olney with 18 points, while Leah Gibson tossed in 13 and Grayce Burgener scored 11.
Lawrenceville did win the junior varsity game, 36-32.
Sanders led LHS with 16 points, while Lailah Opat scored six.
Lawrenceville (3-19, 0-5 LIC) also played host to Vincennes Rivet Tuesday and is scheduled to play at Casey-Westfield for a LIC contest Thursday at 6 p.m.
