LAWRENCEVILLE –– One bad inning proved costly for Lawrence County’s high school baseball team last week, as they dropped another game in Southern Illinois Prospect League action.

Lawrence County had solid start to their game against Flora June 21 and under normal circumstances would have picked up a win, but unfortunately a late rally proved costly and resulted in a 9-6 loss.

If numbers allow, the teams in Southern Illinois Prospect League action played a seven-inning game that counts toward the division standings, then a five-inning exhibition game usually follows.

However, due to numbers issues for both teams, they agreed to play just one nine-inning game and have it count toward the league standings.

Each team scored a run in the first inning, then Flora forged back ahead with a run in the third inning. Lawrence County rallied for three runs in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead and maintained that advantage until the top of the eighth, when Flora broke through for five runs to take a 7-4 lead. Flora tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth, while Lawrence County rallied for two with outs in the bottom of the ninth and had the bases loaded when the final out was recorded.

Jesse Buchanan led Lawrence County at the plate with two singles and two runs scored, while Jack Patterson doubled and drove in a run. Landon Sanders singled, knocked in two runs and scored a run, Boston Gray singled and drove in two runs, Payton Seaney scored two runs and Clayton Potts scored a run.

Garret Moorehead was tagged with the loss in relief, allowing seven runs on eight hits, while walking one and striking out six in three and one-third innings of work. Patterson started and went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits, while walking one and striking out five and Seaney got the only batter he faced to ground into a double play.

Lawrence County (3-7) wrapped up the season with a pair of games this week, as they were slated to host Teutopolis Tuesday and are scheduled to play at Robinson Thursday at 5 p.m.
