Newlin to retire as regional superintendent

Regional Superintendent of Schools Monte Newlin will step down at the end of his current term.
Newlin, Hutsonville, announced Friday that he will not seek re-election and will retire in June 2023.
He was appointed to the position to replace Carol Steinman in April 2011 and was elected in his own right in 2012 to serve the remaining two years on Steinman’s unexpired term. He was subsequently re-elected in 2014 and 2018.
Over a 36 year career in public education, Newlin served as a high school social studies and English teacher, guidance counselor and principal before serving what will be more than 12 years as regional superintendent for Clay, Crawford, Jasper, Lawrence and Richland counties.
“I’ve been privileged to work directly with thousands of students in schools from Fayette, Champaign. Iroquois and Crawford counties throughout my career,” Newlin said.
“Those relationships with students and those forged with so many outstanding education professionals are what I cherish most and take with me into retirement.
“It’s funny. I remember going to teachers’ meetings and being the youngest one in the room. Now. I’m typically the oldest in meetings,” he recalled. “It was a great career and it went by so fast.”
Newlin also expressed gratitude. “I’m so grateful to all those who were supportive of me along with way and that includes the voters who placed their confidence in me repeatedly over the years.”
Newlin plans to find a way to continue make a contribution, though probably not in any full-time capacity.
“God’s not done with me, so I’ll keep on working in some manner or another,” he said.
“Meanwhile, my term doesn’t end until June 30th of 2023, so there’s still plenty to get done, including working with a successor of the voters’ choosing to make the transition smooth. There’s seven months between the election and the end of my term, so that will provide ample time to work with a new regional superintendent so they can hit the ground running on day one.”
Newlin lives in Hutsonville with his wife Angela and three children who attend Hutsonville Junior High School.
“Our kids are triplets and will be completing their freshman year of high school when I retire, so the extra time will allow me to be more present during their last years of school,” he said. “I’m looking forward to more time to be a husband and father.”
