Nearly two handfuls worth of high school baseball players from Lawrence County were recognized as being amongst the best the Little Illini Conference has to offer after being named to one of the three all-conference teams recently.
Nearly two handfuls worth of high school baseball players from Lawrence County were recognized as being amongst the best the Little Illini Conference has to offer after being named to one of the three all-conference teams recently.
A total of nine local players – five from Lawrenceville, four from Red Hill – received All-Little Illini Conference honors, including three First Team selections.
Red Hill had two First Team selections in senior Anthony Jerrell and junior Bryce Gross.
Jerrell batted .310 (21-65) for the Salukis this season, including six doubles, one triple and 13 runs batted in, while he was also solid on the mound, posting a 1.57 ERA in 35.2 innings of work, allowing just eight earned runs, walking 24 batters and striking out 53.
Gross was also effective at the plate and on the mound, as he hit .361 (22-61) with two home runs, four doubles and six runs batted in, while recording a 1.75 ERA in 36 innings, as he allowed nine earned runs, walked 19 and struck out 40.
Meanwhile, Lawrenceville was represented on the First Team by senior Drevin Sanders.
Sanders led the Indians with a .369 batting average (31-84), which included six doubles, one home run, 21 runs scored, 14 runs batted in and 10 stolen bases.
He was also solid on the mound, posting a 4-2 overall record with a 2.67 ERA in 10 appearances. He allowed 20 runs (15 earned) on 39 hits, while walking 12 and striking out 50 in 39.1 innings of work.
Named to the Second Team were Lawrenceville’s Leyton Ivers, Brenyn Winningham and Ryan Schultz, along with Red Hill’s Trevor Tewell.
Ivers hit .366 for the Indians (26-71), including two home runs, one double, 23 runs scored, 11 runs batted in and a team-high 18 stolen bases, while on the mound, Ivers sported a 4-2 record with a 2.33 ERA in 10 appearances, allowing 21 runs (13 earned) on 33 hits, while walking 16 and striking out 50 in 39 total innings.
Winningham hit .302 for the season (19-63), which included two home runs, three doubles, 15 runs batted in, 15 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. Winningham also pitched in 11 games, finishing with a 1-3 record and one save, while sporting a 3.53 ERA. He allowed 19 runs (17 earned) on 42 hits, while walking 15 and striking out 34 in 33.2 innings of work.
Schultz posted a .253 batting average (19-75) with one home run, seven doubles, a team-high 27 runs batted in, 20 runs scored and seven stolen bases. Schultz also made four appearances on the mound, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on four hits, while walking four and striking out three in two and one-third innings of work.
Tewell posted a .389 average (21-54) for the Salukis this season, including two home runs, four doubles and 16 runs batted in, while finishing with a 4.20 ERA with 10 earned runs allowed, four walks and 14 strikeouts in 16.2 innings of work.
Honorable Mention selections were Lawrenceville’s Logan Angle and Red Hill’s Dawson Holtz.
Angle batted .250 for the Indians (17-68) with two home runs, three doubles, 14 runs batted in, six runs scored and four stolen bases, while throwing out seven base runners from the catcher position this season. Angle also made two appearances on the mound, finishing the season with an 0-1 record after giving up eight runs on seven hits with six walks and one strikeout in one total inning of work.
Holtz batted .274 (17-62) with nine runs batted in for the Salukis, while posting a 3.04 ERA with 10 runs allowed, 10 walks and 37 strikeouts in 23 innings of work on the mound.
There were a total of 37 players were named to the three teams, including 18 on the First Team, 10 on the Second Team and nine on the Honorable Mention list.
Newton led with seven total selections, while Paris recorded six, Lawrenceville netted five, Red Hill, Casey-Westfield and Marshall each garnered four, Mt. Carmel and Olney had three apiece and Robinson one.
