Salukis finish 0-3 in pool play at Capital Classic

BRIDGEPORT –– It has been a rough start to the season for Red Hill High School’s boys’ basketball team.

For the second straight time, the Salukis dropped all three of their games in pool play at the annual Lawrence County Basketball Capital Classic and is still in search of their first win of the season.

Red Hill opened with a 61-39 loss to Mt. Carmel in the first game of the day Friday.

“Turnovers hurt us early,” RHHS head coach Bryan Havill said. “We were without our starting point guard (Dawson Holtz) who is sick, but we still have to make better decisions when we have the basketball. It was better in the second half, but we have to continue to work on things.”

The Salukis held a brief lead (5-4) in the middle of the opening quarter, but it as short-lived. Mt. Carmel countered with a 10-0 run to take a 14-4 lead and the Golden Aces would hold a 17-8 advantage at the end of the first period.

Red Hill hung around in the second quarter, getting to within four about midway through and as close as three with just under two minutes remaining, but Mt. Carmel ended the half with an 8-1 spurt to take a 32-22 lead at halftime.

The third quarter spelled doom for the Salukis, as they were outscored 20-9 to make the score 52-31 heading into the final period. Red Hill trailed by as many as 24 in the fourth quarter and ended up being outscored 9-8 in the period to reach the final totals.

Anthony Jerrell led RHHS with 12 points, eight rebounds, one steal and one assist, while Andrew Maxfield posted 12 points, six rebounds, two steals, one assist and one blocked shot. Ben Stimler contributed six points, seven rebounds, two steals and one assist, Jacob Powden recorded five points, two steals and one rebound, Hayden Arbuckle collected three points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist and Drayden Pentell added one point and three rebounds.

Gage Kennard led Mt. Carmel with 17 points, two steals, one rebound and one assist, while Levi Beesley posted 13 points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist.

“We just have to go out and compete no matter who we are playing,” Havill said. “All I can ask for is the kids to play as hard as they can when they are on the floor and for the most part we did that.”

In the other game of the early session, Olney rolled past Edwards County, 70-35.

Chase Travis led the Tigers with 14 points, while Drew Blank was also in double figures with 10.

Dylan Rhodes was the lone player in double figures for Edwards County with 10 points.

Later on Friday, the Salukis dropped a back-and-forth contest to Edwards County, 60-58, on a putback in the final seconds.

Red Hill jumped out to a 20-13 lead after one quarter, but led just 33-31 at halftime. The Salukis were then outscored 16-8 in the third quarter for a 47-41 deficit. Still trailing by three late, Powden drained a three-pointer for the Salukis with 12 seconds remaining to tie the game at 58-58. However, Edwards County got a putback from Dylan Rhodes after a missed three-pointer on the following possession and Jerrell’s desperation heave at the buzzer was off the mark and the Lions escaped with the win.

Jerrell led RHHS with 20 points, eight rebounds and two assists, while Maxfield posted 17 points, nine rebounds, five steals, two assists and one blocked shot. Arbuckle registered nine points, two rebounds, two steals and two assists, Powden contributed eight points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals and Stimler collected four points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Rhodes led Edwards County with 20 points, while Mitch McFall and Ryder Bell were also in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

In the other late session contest, Olney downed Mt. Carmel, 68-47.

Travis led Olney with 32 points, while Ian Winkler reached double digits with 10 points.

Zach Allen led Mt. Carmel with 18 points, while Kennard tossed in 17.

Red Hill then finished up pool play Saturday morning with a 75-41 loss to eventual champion Olney.

The Salukis dug themselves a 26-11 hole after one quarter, then were outscored 18-8 in the second quarter for a 44-19 halftime deficit. Red Hill was then outscored 25-16 in the third period to make the score 69-35, then each team scored six points in the fourth quarter to reach the final totals.

Jerrell led RHHS with 18 points, five rebounds and one assist, while Maxfield posted seven points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist. Arbuckle contributed seven points, two steals and one assist, Powden registered four points, two rebounds and two assists, Isaiah Stitt collected three points, one rebound and one assist and Stimler added two points and one rebound.

Travis led Olney with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Blank posted 16 points, three steals and one assist.

In the other final round pool play game, Mt. Carmel beat Edwards County 67-37.

Kennard led Mt. Carmel with 28 points, while Smith and Noah Martin scored nine points apiece.

Alex Calverley led Edwards County with 11 points, while Rhodes also reached double digits with 10 points.

Red Hill went on to lose to county rival Lawrenceville in the seventh place game Saturday afternoon, 64-40. For details on that game as well as the other final round games, check out the article on page 1B.

Red Hill (0-5) played host to Evansville Day School Tuesday and will play at Lawrenceville Friday at 6:15 p.m.
