HGS-PGS softball splits games to open season



One up, one down were the results for Hutsonville-Palestine’s junior high softball team Saturday, as the Lady Tigers opened their season in a three-team, round-robin event at Casey-Westfield.

Hutsonville-Palestine opened the season with a 12-0 loss to Casey-Westfield, but rebounded to blank Oakwood in their next game, 10-0.

Against Casey-Westfield, the Lady Tigers gave up 11 runs in the first inning and never recovered. Casey-Westfield tacked on another run in the fourth to complete the scoring. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Hutsonville-Palestine had no hits in the game, but did draw three walks and had one batter hit by a pitch.

Hayden Monan was the losing pitcher, allowing 10 runs (three earned) on six hits without retiring a batter. Rilyn Lawhead went the rest of the way, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out three in four innings of work.

Against Oakwood, Hutsonville-Palestine turned the tables, throwing a no-hitter of their own. The Lady Tigers scored six runs in the second inning, then tacked on two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Kailyn Shoulders led HGS-PGS at the plate with a double, two singles and two runs scored, while Gracie Alumbaugh singled twice and scored two runs. Lawhead doubled, knocked in four runs and scored a run, Kendra Alumbaugh singled, drove in two runs and scored a run, Abby Drury doubled and scored a run, Tiffany Traxler singled twice and scored a run and Brylee Krick and Kaylynn Davison each scored two runs and drove in a run.

Monan was the winning pitcher, allowing one walk and striking out eight over five hitless innings.

Hutsonville-Palestine (1-1) played at Cumberland Monday, was scheduled to play host to Martinsville Tuesday and is slated to play at Oblong Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
