James Olen “Jim” Ferguson

James Olen “Jim” Ferguson, 88, Oblong, passed away on Thursday June 3, 2021 at his home from congestive heart failure. He was born on Oct. 1, 1932 in Palestine, the son of Glenwood and Faye (Purcell) Ferguson. On Feb. 20, 1968 he married Mary Alice Thompson and she survives.
When he was young he worked on a farm until he graduated from high school. He was a member of the Oblong High School Class of 1962 and the V.F.W. Jim served in the United States Navy for two terms most of the time as a maintenance man on the USS Dixie. After his discharge from the Navy, Jim served one term with the United States Air Force. He worked many jobs in his life, working in various factories, driving trucks, working in the oil and gas fields and in steel mills. Locally he worked at Victor Dana, the Briggs Pottery until it closed and for many years with the Oblong Township.
Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, vegetable gardening, being a mechanic and working on lawnmowers for himself and other people.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ferguson of Oblong; two sons and a daughter-in-law James L. “Jimmy” and Tina Ferguson of Oblong, and Joe Ferguson; two daughters and sons-in-law Kimberly and Paul Kamplain of Hardinville, and Janie and Terry Goss of Oblong; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law Tom and Mary Ellen Ferguson of Kathlyn, Fla.; a sister and brother-in-law Janie and Dale O’Dell of Stoy; a sister-in-law Barbara Thompson of Hardinville, and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Jim in death were his parents; a daughter Norma Faye; grandson Justin Ferguson; a brother and sister-in-law Bill and Dottie Ferguson; a sister and brother-in-law Glenda and Paul McFarland and sister-in-law Mary Ellen Ferguson.
A Celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday June 15, 2021 at the Pulliam Funeral Home in Oblong. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service on Tuesday June 15, 2021 at the funeral home. Burial will be on Sunday June 20, 2021 in the Oblong Cemetery with Military Rites be conducted by Oblong American Legion Post #219.
