Keep the belief

Things are pretty good. Not perfect; but not horrible either.
Things are pretty good. Not perfect; but not horrible either. I consider the aggregate when I say such things and I could, if need be, make a persuasive argument that things are terrible. I have the benefit of over 70 years to look back on.
They used to call such vision wisdom but now they endlessly try to sell me supplemental health insurance and I doubt if they listen to a thing I say.
Here’s what I know for certain - The world will not end but it will change; There really is a God who can, has, and may do anything He pleases and our ability to effect that is statistically more limited than our chances of being regular lottery winners.
So its good news / bad news; He’s real, and I’m grateful, but He doesn’t do tricks. This world is just one of many as anyone who has looked very long at the sky can tell you and there may be critters out there, thinking these same kinds of thoughts about themselves that I mention here to you about us.
For all this to be real, for the tipping domino cascade of events from back then to now and on to their future to have any meaning at all then they must persist, just as we do.
Bad things happened today I’m sure of it and no, thank you, I don’t need examples. As an experiment I stopped watching the news for a few days after making a list of the headlines. Nothing they are talking about tonight was even mentioned three days ago. Despite our thirst for knowledge, we have a short attention span and drink at a very polluted pool that is very shallow.
A guy appears in court today for bringing down a PanAm airliner over Scotland in 1983. It was in December and a trip I was planning as a tour guide was canceled as a result. It was not just bad but stupid. Whatever his point was about having the ability to kill lots of innocent undeserving human beings has been lost totally over the passage of time.
Other such acts in other places continue to prove nothing but how inhumane humans can be to one another. Still, I am certain that it will all work out. You are free to doubt me of course, and should still give generously to the charities of your choice and pray they bring a benefit to those in need. My certainty is not based on anything you or they may do.
I am kind and generous not because I think Santa Claus is watching me or because I think when the roll is called up yonder I might get to be there if I am. I do it just because its my nature and always has been. It strikes me odd still that people are so reluctant to believe there really are nice people in the world.
If you are one that doesn’t, then it tells us two things - you stress yourself far too much over things you can do nothing about nor really matter. You could use some of that time spent worrying about yourself to do some good instead. It won’t make up for any of the harm done by others but its a start, and for me, that’s something.

To keep our democracy strong, we need to restore trust in news media

January 23, 2023Americans are politically polarized, cynical about long-respected institutions and disappointed with elected leaders at the local, state and national levels. What’s driving these trends? I believe a sweeping lack of trust is a significant factor.
