Another all-around solid effort led to another win for Robinson High School’s girls’ basketball team Monday.
The Lady Maroons jumped out to an early lead and rolled to a Little Illini Conference win at Lawrenceville, 60-26.
“We did a pretty good job of coming out and taking care of business,” RHS head coach Scott Zane said. “We did a good job pressuring the basketball, played really good defense and were able to put them away. Then, that allowed us to get everyone else some playing time.”
Robinson scored a pair of baskets in the first 35 seconds to grab a lead they would not relinquish, en route to grabbing a 10-2 lead in the first three minutes. The margin increased to 20-7 late in the first quarter before Lawrenceville scored a couple of baskets to get within 20-11 by the end of the period.
The Lady Maroons then took control in the second quarter, outscoring Lawrenceville 20-4 to take a 40-15 lead at halftime. Robinson then scored the first 13 points of the third quarter, holding Lawrenceville scoreless for more than five minutes and taking their biggest lead of the game at 53-15. The Lady Maroons would end up outscoring Lawrenceville 16-8 in the period to take a 56-23 lead into the fourth quarter, where the clock ran continuously due to the IHSA’s 30-point mercy rule. Robinson would outscore Lawrenceville 4-3 in the final period to reach the final totals.
Elizabeth Shea led a balanced RHS attack with 13 points, 10 rebounds and one steal, while Katelyn Jones totaled 12 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, one assist and one blocked shot. Marisa Zane contributed 12 points, nine assists, six steals and five rebounds, Alexia Zane posted nine points, two rebounds and one assist, Raegan Manhart recorded eight points, three rebounds and one assist and Lucy List netted six points, three rebounds and two assists.
“We do a pretty good job getting everyone involved,” Zane said. “We have three girls averaging double figures and the other two are at eight and six (points per game), so we want to see that continue. It was also nice to get some other girls in the game tonight and work some different combinations.”
Gracie Stallings led Lawrenceville with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot, while Bri Yarber posted 10 points, four rebounds and two steals.
In the junior varsity game, Robinson came out on the short end of a 24-12 decision.
Annie List led RHS with six points, while Grace Gower scored four and Taylor Blank added two.
Robinson (11-3, 3-1 LIC) will play Mt. Carmel in the quarterfinals of the Little Illini Conference Tournament Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in Paris.
“Our girls are looking forward to the opportunity to play them again after they got us by one the last time (50-49 in the Lady Maroons Thanksgiving Invitational Nov. 26),” Zane said. “We are going to have to play really well and we hope we can keep this momentum rolling and it translates into a good showing in the conference tournament.”
