Solid pitching and timely hitting led Hutsonville-Palestine’s softball team to a big win Tuesday.

The Lady Tigers got another strong pitching performance from Izzy Sheets and produced just enough at the plate to score a 2-0 win over visiting Paris in a non-conference contest.

Hutsonville-Palestine grabbed an early lead with a run in the second inning, then added an insurance run in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Krescene Holscher and Kiara Fralicker led the Lady Tigers at the plate with a single and a run batted in apiece, while Lily Holcomb singled and scored a run and Madi Kingery scored a run.

That was enough for Sheets, who limited Paris to just one hit, while walking two and striking out 14 in seven scoreless innings to earn the complete game victory.

The Lady Tigers continued their strong play Wednesday, as they went on the road and scored a 13-0 win at Wayne City.

Hutsonville-Palestine opened the scoring with five runs in the first, then plated four more in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth and another in the fifth to pull away for the win. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Sheets led the offense for the Lady Tigers with a home run, a double, two singles and two runs batted in, while Addison McNair singled three times, scored two runs and drove in a run. Alaina Holcomb posted a single, two runs batted in and two runs scored, Holscher singled, knocked in two runs and scored a run, Zoey Beabout singled and scored two runs, Kingery added a base hit and a run batted in, Fralicker singled and scored a run, Ahlya Abel knocked in two runs, Ilayna Sheets scored two runs, Ayla Cook and Izzy Monan each drove in a run and Lily Holcomb and Alysa Kennedy scored a run apiece.

Sheets also dominated in the circle again, tossing a no-hitter. She pitched to just one batter over the minimum, while recording 11 strikeouts over five innings, with an error the only thing keeping her from a perfect game.

Hutsonville-Palestine (18-5) was scheduled to play host to Oblong for a varsity-JV doubleheader Thursday and Senior Night, while the Lady Tigers were to then close out the regular season with a non-conference game at Robinson Friday. Hutsonville-Palestine is scheduled to open the postseason against Dieterich in the semifinals of the IHSA Class 1A Oblong Regional Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

A late rally was not enough to overcome an early deficit for Oblong-Palestine-Hutsonville’s baseball team, as they dropped their first game of postseason play.

Solid performances against a tough field led to a handful of local athletes qualifying for the state meet, while several others fell just short. When all was said and done, Robinson High School’s boys’ track team finished third out of 19 teams that competed in the meet and qualified four individuals for state in a total of five events.

Maroons edge Lawrenceville, 5-4, to win Regional opener

The third time was the charm for Robinson High School’s baseball team Monday evening. The Maroons played Lawrenceville for the third time this season and for the third time, the game was decided by one run. However, the latest meeting resulted in a win for RHS and it came when it counted the most – in the first round of the IHSA Class 2A Newton Regional.
