Navigating the holidays after loss

Between the joyous music and beautiful Christmas lights, we often forget about those struggling throughout the holiday season because of the loss of family or a friend.
Between the joyous music and beautiful Christmas lights, we often forget about those struggling throughout the holiday season because of the loss of family or a friend.
This time of year is typically one filled with joy and togetherness, but it can be especially difficult when you are missing a loved one. You may find that there were a thousand moments you took for granted because you thought there would be a thousand more. Those moments are reminisced during this time of year, and you are likely wishing that you could have another holiday with someone you have lost. Whether it is the first or 10th holiday without them, there is no doubt it is still hard knowing they are not physically present.
While navigating the holidays, it is especially important to maintain awareness of your overall well-being. You might find that all you can do this year is focus on surviving and caring for your mental health alongside that of your children’s. It is okay to not be okay.
“It’s important to know your limits,” said Missy Burton, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Clinical Supervisor Coordinator. “Well-meaning people may invite you to events throughout the season, but you may only be able to attend one. And you may only be able to stay for an hour. And that’s okay.”
But should you find yourself feeling joy with others after experiencing loss, you should not feel guilty.
If you are experiencing grief, creating new traditions in your family and making the most of your times together may help you and your family move forward.
