Oblong, Sep. 21, 1928 - Ill. — Jan. 11, 2022Norma Elizabeth Wisely, 93 of Oblong, IL passed away peacefully on Tuesday January 11, 2022 in the comfort of her home.
She was born in rural Ina, IL on September 21, 1928 to Nolan and Mabel (Smith) Sneed. On August 16, 1952 she married Arkell Wisely who preceded her in death in 2018.
Norma was a high school chemistry teacher and had taught in Sesser, Elkville and Seneca before she and Arkell started their family. She graduated from Benton High School in 1946 and the University of Illinois on 1950. The Wisely family moved to the Oblong community in 1971 and put down deep roots. She was passionate about gardening and always had beautiful flowers as well as an herb garden and native prairie. Norma and Arkell were members of the Nature Conservancy for many years. She was a devoted member of the Oblong First Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher and Woman's Missionary Union director for many years. Her greatest joy was the time she spent with her beloved family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law Donald and Kathy Wisely, Oblong, IL and Stephen Wisely, Oblong, IL; a daughter and son-in-law Debora "Debbie" and Mike Walls, Robinson, IL; grandchildren Joel Wisely and Rachel, Robb and Kaley Wisely, Kevin and Francesca Walls and Rachel and Lupe Hernandez; great grandson Jack Michael Wall and a great granddaughter due in April 2022. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Maryan Sneed, Aurora, CO and Audrey Rich, Cypress, TX; brother-in-law and sister-in-law George "Tom" and Joanne Dion Wisely, Sun City Center, FL; niece Kim Sneed, Brookshire, TX and nephew David and Jill Sneed, Evergreen, CO.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband and one brother Donald Sneed.
Celebration of Norma's life will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday January 16, 2022 at the Oblong First Baptist Church 201 South Garfield St Oblong, IL. Burial will follow in Kirk Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until service time at the church. The family requests that expressions of sympathy may take the form of a contribution to the Oblong First Baptist Church or the Nature Conservancy.
