Two recent Robinson High School graduates were provided the opportunity to put the pads on one last time, but neither of them is going to participate.
Former Robinson High School football players Rylan King and Dylan York were selected to participate in the annual Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star Game this weekend along with more than 90 other players from the Wabash Valley area.
However, due to an injury, York will be unable to participate in the game, while King elected not to play.
York was the leading tackler for the Maroons during his senior season with 36 solos and 32 assists from the safety position, while he also led the team in forced fumbles with two. In addition, he had six pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and two tackles for loss. York also contributed on the offensive side of the ball, as he had 17 catches for 185 yards as a receiver for the Maroons, while rushing 11 times for 14 yards and a touchdown along with returning a punt for a touchdown.
King also saw action on both sides of the ball this past season for the Maroons, recording 23.5 tackles, including one sack and three tackles for loss from his defensive end spot, while also catching five passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.
The Robinson players would have been members of the Gold Division team, along with players from fellow Illinois schools Marshall, Mattoon, Newton, Olney, Red Hill and Tri-County, as well as Covington, Greencastle, Indian Creek, Linton-Stockton, Northview, North Vermillion, South Putnam, Sullivan and Terre Haute North from Indiana.
Players on the Black Division team are from Illinois schools Casey-Westfield, Cumberland and Paris and Indiana schools Cascade, Union-Dugger, Eastern Greene, Monrovia, North Central, North Daviess, North Putnam, Owen Valley, Parke Heritage, Riverton Parke, South Vermillion, Terre Haute South and West Vigo.
There were a total of 94 players selected, with 47 placed on each team. Head coach for the Gold Division team is Northview’s Mark Raetz, while Owen Valley’s Rob Gibson will serve as head coach for the Black Division team.
The WVFCA was founded in February 2003, with the intent to gather together high school coaches and supporters of football throughout the Wabash Valley. The focus of the group is to promote football and football-related activities. The WVFCA each year hosts several skill camps for athletes in grade school through high school and conducts clinics for coaches and volunteers.
At the onset, 22 schools formed the original group, while 14 new schools have since been added and there are 33 schools represented in this year’s all-star game.
A meeting is held each year where an All-Wabash Valley team is selected and recognition is made for not only athletic accomplishment, but also academic success. The largest event each year is the annual all-star game and provides revenue to support the other aspects of the WVFCA. Each year, over $6,000 in scholarships are awarded to athletes in the game. Since the first game in 2004, over $75,000 in support has been provided to local athletes.
This year’s game is set to be played Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Illinois time at Indiana State University’s Memorial Stadium in Terre Haute.
