75 years ago — 1947
Lowell Burkett was the speaker at last night’s meeting of the Kiwanis Club. He was presented by Dr. Bill Schmidt, chairman of the program committee for May.
Mr. Burkett is an instructor at the R.T.H.S. He has charge of the G.I. Training program being organized at R.T.H.S.

Crawford County was in the grip of a “Summer” cold wave today as the temperature dropped 43 degrees in a little over fifteen hours according to the official recording at the Ohio Oil Company Refinery here.
At 3:00 o’clock yesterday afternoon the mercury started dropping from a high of 87 degrees to 76 degrees at midnight last night. After midnight, the mercury began a steady drop, dropping 32 degrees at 6:30 o’clock this morning.

Ingeborg Machiedo of Vienna, Austria, arrived in Palestine Wednesday after flying across the Atlantic to wed Lyle Guyer of Palestine. The wedding will take place at the Quaker Lane Church Sunday at 2:00 o’clock with Rev, Lee Swope reading the vows.

Patty Anderson of Seagoville, Tex., received a scholarship at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts when the classes exhibited at a student show this month.
Miss Anderson exhibited in painting and drawing class for eleven to fourteen year old students. The judges announced her picture was the best produced in two years in her age group.
She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Anderson of Seagoville. Her parents were both formerly residents of Robinson.

50 years ago — 1972
The Public Auction of farm machinery, livestock equipment and personal property of Mrs. Frances (Rousch) Guy, at the farm one mile west of Palestine on Route 33 was well attended the last Saturday afternoon in March.
Machinery and equipment had been carefully maintained and the large group of buyers recognized the values with spirited bidding in the fast moving sale. Lyle Paddick and Son Auction Service and V.C. Van Tassel conducted the sale.

Mrs. Emily Purcell, Postmaster at Stoy for the past 24 years, announced her retirement, effective May Effingham Sectional Center postmaster, Richard F. Behrman presents her a Certificate of Service award signed by Postmaster General E.T. Klassen.
The post office of Stoy will continue operation under the management of Mrs. Faye Ferguson who has been appointed to the position of Officer-in-Charge until the selection of a postmaster is made.

Hundreds of strawberry pickers will have to wait until next year to enjoy the fruit from the Perkins strawberry patch near West Union. The responsible culprit is apparently a tiny insect so small that is cannot be seen by the naked eye.

Behind the wheel driver testing will be conducted at the Driver Examining Station on N. Jackson St., Robinson, each Wednesday during daylight evening hours, effective June 14, it was announced today by the office of Secretary of State John W Lewis.

25 years ago — 1997
The publisher of two county newspapers has filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
Hometown Publications Inc. publishes the Oblong Gem and Palestine Pioneer in Crawford County, as well as the Bridgeport Leader in Lawrence County.
If its bankruptcy petition is approved, the company will keep operating while it reorganizes. But publication of the Oblong and Bridgeport weeklies will pass into other hands.

This weekend, Oblong residents may “pull the plug” on their lake.
Members of Oblong Lake Committee plan to open a valve on the dam at Oblong Lake Saturday, letting the lake drain. Then, later this summer, contractors will begin restoring the lake. That plan could change, pending a final decision on the benefits of dredging the lake versus re-excavating it.

Lawyer Brent Winters says he hopes to become the Republican nominee for the 19th Congressional District, saying it’s time to re-establish time proven principles of moral and family values.
In visits around the district Wednesday, the 42-year-old Charleston man pledged to work for a middle-class tax reduction as well as less regulation for agricultural and small business.
