75 years ago — 1947
Dr. Floyd F. Cunningham, head of the department of Geography at the Florence (Ala.) State Teachers College has resigned to accept the chairmanship of the Geography department at the Southern Illinois State Teachers College at Carbondale.
Dr. Cunningham was born and reared east of Flat Rock and is a son of C.H. Cunningham, now a resident of Robinson. Mrs. Cunningham is the former Helen Espy of Palestine.

Miss Evon Hand, Bridgeport, suffered a lacerated arm in an automobile accident south of Oblong last night while en route to the Oblong Fair with two other persons.
After examination at the Brooks Hospital it was necessary to take six stitches in her arm. The other two persons escaped without injury.

Judy Ann Lowe, small daughter of Mr and Mrs. Louis Lowe of this city, was nipped under the eye by a playful pup inflicting an inch tear below the right eye. She was at once taken to the Schmidt Clinic where it was decided to give her the rabies treatment to be safe. It was at first rumored the child had been bitten by a mad dog.
The dog was later discovered to be a small pup in the neighborhood and the child was bitten when she leaned over to pet it.

Crawford county ex-GI Joes kept the banks of Crawford county busy yesterday cashing their terminal leave bonds to the tune of almost $60,000 it was estimated today.
The cash was not a gift but money that the veteran had earned the hard way on the road to Tokyo or the road to Berlin. It was money due him when he failed to get the regular 30-day furlough for each year of service in uniform.

50 years ago — 1972
A local woman is reported in critical condition today from injuries which she received in a two-car crash Saturday night on U.S. Highway 41 south of Terre Haute.
She is Mrs. Veta White, 37, Southwind Trailer Court, who is reported in a coma at Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, where she was taken after receiving emergency treatment at St. Anthony is Hospital in Terre Haute.
Suffering broken ribs and collar bone, and brain stem bruise, her doctor gives her less than a 50-50 chance to survive, according to her brother.

Robinson City Police Chief Howard Kirchhoff today cautioned motorists about observing stop signs displayed on school buses when loading or unloading children.
Kirchhoff noted the law requires that motorists stop when they are meeting or following a school bus when the stop sign appears. This is in effect in cities as well as on the highway.

The Crawford County Council of Camp Fire Girls will open its annual fund-drive with a house-to-house canvass Sunday in Robinson, Oblong, Palestine and Hutsonville.

MUNICH — Arab terrorists kidnaped and killed nine members of the Israeli Olympic team Tuesday when a German police ambush backfired.
Olympic officials decided today to continue the competition Thursday despite the daylong terror that left 17 dead.

25 years ago — 1997
Hot weather may have diminished crowds at Palestine Labor Day Weekend, but overall the festivities were a success, organizers say.
Pioneer City Rodeo Chairman Roy Shaner said ticket sales were down slightly from last year, but not so much as to cause concern. Warnings of rain Saturday evening and rising temperatures Sunday kept a number of rodeo-goers away, he said.

No one was injured but two vehicles were damaged in an accident in the annual post-Palestine Labor Day Parade traffic jam.

Oblong Village Board has thrown out mobile home restrictions it passed last month and zoning opponents have petitioned the village to keep things the way they are.
The board voted Wednesday to delete two sections of the new ordinance after being advised by Frank Helengstein, the village’s Illinois codification consultant, that they were unenforceable because Oblong does not have zoing.
