It was another strong night on the mats for Robinson High School’s wrestling team Wednesday, as the Maroons picked up two more dual wins on Senior Night.
“Last night was a great night for Robinson,” RHS head coach Tanner Keeler. “We got to honor a group of young adults who have worked their tails off over the last four years. This is the group that were freshman when I took over the team and it is really sad for me knowing that we only have one more regular season week with this group. But, they have all pushed me to be a better coach and I am so grateful that I have got to be a small part in their lives. Every year I tell all my seniors to leave the team better than you found it and I can truthfully say that they will definitely leave this team better than when they walked in. I am really going to miss being their coach.”
On the mats, Robinson rolled to a 66-18 win over a short-handed North Knox team, while also defeating Oblong-Palestine-Hutsonville, 63-18.
Against North Knox, won three matches by pinfall, while the other eight victories came via forfeit.
Scoring pins for RHS were Jared Hermann at 170, David Staller at 182 and Dalton Woods at 285, while picking up forfeit wins were Landon Cornwell (106), Kaylub Trueman (113), Jacob Booher (120), Keaton Ault (126), Rachel Richey (132), Lenox Parker (138), Nikkalus Bonnell (145) and Craig Markello (220).
During the North Knox match, Hermann’s win was the 100th of his career, becoming just the ninth RHS wrestler to hit that milestone.
“Jared is a fantastic young man who comes in everyday wanting to leave the room better than when he walked in,” Keeler said. “He is such a positive person who makes the room a lot brighter when he walks in. None of Jared’s wins came easy and he has earned each one of them. Every year kids come in and you can tell which kids will be the ones that you need to teach wrestling and there are select few that all you need to do as a coach is just fine tune their abilities. He is someone that all I needed to do was just fine tune his skills. I’m so proud of the work that he has put in and I’m thankful that I got to be there to watch him succeed.”
In the Oblong-Palestine-Hutsonville match, all but one of the 11 contested matches were decided via pinfall, with Robinson earning seven pins and OPH scoring three.
Winning via pinfall for RHS were Broady Kelly over William Wilson at 113, Ault over Mason Correll at 120, Lenox Parker over Bowen Ramsey at 138, Kahne Hyre over Liam Wirey at 152, Hermann over Aaron Teska at 170, Markello over Javen Sweitzer at 220 and Paul Benton over Ethan Miller at 285.
Staller also scored an 11-4 win over Austin Hargrave at 182, while forfeit wins were earned by Cornwell (106), Draegan Johnson (145) and Braxton Pethtel (195).
Meanwhile, OPH scored pinfall victories at 126 with Ian Rosborough over Booher, Owen Griffin over Rachey Richey at 132 and Nicki Roberts over Kreighton Parker at 160.
“I was actually very pleased with our wrestling,” OPH head coach Mike Rosborough said. “My 120 wrestled the best I have seen all year, as the same goes for my 160 and 220. But, we are a young program and it has been a very long season. We struggled coming back from the holiday, but I believe we are getting some of that fire back. We also have several kids out with injuries and we hope to get them back soon. For example, a week ago I had four 145-pounders, but tonight I had to scratch at that weight class. This is a tough sport, but I expect us to continue to advance both physically and mentally.”
Keeler reiterated he was proud of all his wrestlers for their performances, but wanted to specially recognize the seniors for all their hard work this year and throughout their careers.
“Dalton, Craig, Jared, David and Paul are all great young men and we are really going to miss them next year, not just because of how well they do, but because each one of them brings a unique quality about them that makes our room fun and entertaining,” Keeler said. “So, from all of the coaches, we want to say thank you for everything.”
In addition to Wednesday’s matches, Robinson and OPH both competed in a freshman-sophomore tournament at Carmi Monday and had several wrestlers fare well. For RHS, Kaylub Trueman and Keagan Tuel each finished first, Kifer Stevens placed fifth and Kayden Shook-Wesley finished sixth. For OPH, Mason Correll and Peyton Walker each finished fourth, Judah Sweitzer came in fifth and William Wilson placed sixth.
Robinson (21-4) and OPH (10-14) are scheduled to compete at the Olney Duals Saturday starting at 10 a.m. at Olney Central College.
