State corn, beans mature slowly


The state’s corn and soybeans continue to mature at a slightly slower rate than normal.
Still, in areas where the crops are most advanced, corn harvest could begin within the week.
Eighty-eight percent of the corn crop has reached the dough stage, compared to the five-year average of 95 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Corn dented reached 64 percent, compared to the average of 74 percent. Corn mature reached 11 percent, compared to the average of 21 percent.
Corn condition was rated 4 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 51 percent good and 20 percent excellent.
Soybeans setting pods reached 89 percent, compared to the average of 96 percent. Beans dropping leaves reached 4 percent, compared to the average of 7 percent.
Condition of the crop was rated 5 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 50 percent good and 17 percent excellent.
Statewide, the average temperature was 72.6 degrees, .9 degrees above normal. The average temperature in Crawford County for the week was almost 74.1.
Precipitation averaged 1.36 inches, .57 inches above normal. Locally, .78 inch of rain was reported.
Topsoil moisture supply was rated 9 percent very short, 21 percent short, 66 percent adequate and 4 percent surplus.
Subsoil moisture supply was rated 10 percent very short, 21 percent short, 67 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus.
There were 5.5 days suitable for field work last week.
