State corn, beans progressing



The state corn crop is progressing slightly ahead of schedule, while soybeans are lagging behind, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported this week.
Corn silking reached 81 percent, compared to the average of 80 percent. On the other hand, corn that had reached the dough stage was at 17 percent, compared to the average of 19 percent.
Corn condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 17 percent fair, 53 percent good and 18 percent excellent.
Soybeans blooming reached 55 percent, compared to the average of 69 percent. Beans setting pods reached 20 percent, compared to the average of 36 percent.
Soybean condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 46 percent good and 15 percent excellent.It is estimated that 720,000 acres of winter wheat was harvested for grain, up 18 percent from last year.
Yield is estimated at 79 bushels per acre, equal to 2021. Production is estimated at 56.9 million bushels, up 18 percent from last year.
Statewide, the average temperature was 78.8 degrees, 2.3 degrees above normal. In Crawford County, the average temperature last week was 83.
Precipitation averaged.94 inches, .09 inches below normal. Locally, 1.13 inches of rain was officially reported, all on Sunday. Many parts of the county reported higher totals, however.
Topsoil moisture supply was rated 16 percent very short, 19 percent short, 60 percent adequate and 5 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 17 percent very short, 15 percent short, 64 percent adequate and 4 percent surplus.
There were 5.6 days suitable for field work last week.
