Most of Illinois winter wheat started the new year in good shape.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, condition of the crop was 1 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 57 percent good and 11 percent excellent. 
Statewide, the average temperature was 30 degrees, .1 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 2.47 inches, .22 inches below normal.
Topsoil moisture supply was rated 8 percent short, 82 percent adequate and 10 percent surplus.
Subsoil moisture supply was rated 6 percent very short, 23 percent short, 66 percent adequate and 5 percent surplus.
